Cervia – The City of Salt

Tour Details

Close to the Po Delta Park and about 20km from Ravenna lays Cervia, one of the touristic jewels of the Romagna Coast, known since the Etruscan age for salt production.

A visit to the city of salt reveals the charm of a place from ancient origins but completely rebuilt at the end of the 17thcentury, in order to create a “model city” where one of the most precious raw materials of antiquity was produced: the white gold, or salt.

Our tour starts from St. Michael’s Tower, built for the defense of the city against the pirate’s raids and as a checkpoint for the transport of salt on the “burchielle”, typical flat-bottomed boats that were dragged by a rope the salt workers along the harbor channel.

To know the culture and the history of salt, we will visit the MUSA – Museum of salt and salt Civilization which, set up in the salt warehouses, testifies the activity and the life of the salt workers with tools, images and testimonies.

Out of the Museum, we will admire the suggestive fountain The Suspended Carpet: a carpet covered by thousands of colorful mosaic tiles, which seems to fluctuate magically on the water.

Walking through the streets of the city center, we will notice the particular structure of the city, with the typical houses integrated along the perimeter of the city walls, and we will stop for a coffee or ice cream in the beautiful Piazza Garibaldi, civil and religious center of this graceful small town. In here, there are the two most representative buildings, the City Hall and the Cathedral.

We will see the exterior of the Old Fish Market and of the eighteenth-century Town Theater, and we will visit the Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio, which preserves a valuable 14thcentury wooden crucifix and a Venetian pipe organ, built in 1788 by Gaetano Callido: it is one of the few “Callido” still operating in the region!

The tour ends with a walk in the ancient Borgo Marina, among the houses where the fishermen’s families lived, is the Faro (lighthouse), which, still working since 1875, continues to lead the sailors to a safe and hospitable port.

The visiting order of the monuments is not the one listed above and is adjusted according to the needs of visitors. We do not assume responsibility for ticket increases or changes of monuments opening hours that may occur during the year.
